LS LOWRY
The lower juniors have studied the life and works of the well known artist LS Lowry.
As part of their study they visited the Salford Gallery to find out more about him.
They were fascinated with the movement of the people and animals in his pictures
and tried creating their own characters in the same style.
We hope you like our gallery!
This unit looks at the work of Lowry and his very particular style of working. The
children will be able to:-
- To take part in a discussion about Lowry after looking at examples of his work.
- To talk about the mood of the pictures, the feelings portrayed by the people.
- Consider the range of words that could be used to describe the characters in the
pictures, and the body positions too.
- Practice drawing figures in pencil using a selection of black and white prints to
focus on the lines and shapes he used.
- Observe the colours used in the backgrounds of Lowry’s Manchester paintings.
- Enlarge their drawings to make a class collage in the style of Lowry in black and
white only.
- Choose a painting of Lowry’s to re create using crayons/ coloured pencils/ oil pastilles.
- Recognise that an artist’s style may change over time.
- Re create a chosen print using different media.
- Browse the internet for examples of Lowry’s work.
- Use previous experience of Lowry figures and experiment with brush and paint.
- Evaluate their work using a framework of key words.
- Compare a Lowry seascape with his City paintings, creating a bank of describing words
to illustrate similarities and differences.
- Create a seascape picture on heavy card using a limited palette of colour, and consolidate
the left right techniques used in landscape work.
